( Studio | The Artists | The Process )
In 1990, two friends, a potter and a painter, entered into a mutually beneficial partnership and
formed Heather Lane Pottery. The name came from the tiny studio they used, which was
located on a street called Heather Lane. Without a retail store front, the pottery was
initially sold at art shows in Michigan. As the demand for Heather Lane pottery grew,
employees were hired and trained. Eventually the tiny studio could no longer keep up with
the demand. In 1997 the studio moved to Cascade, Michigan. The studio was
purchased by a long-time Heather Lane Pottery employee, Susan Hathaway, who ran the business in
Cascade until it outgrew that space. In the spring of 2006 Heather Lane found a new home
in Ada, Michigan, just outside of Grand Rapids. Our new studio is perfectly situated, in
the heart of a village of galleries, unique shops and restaurants.
Our new studio gives visitors the opportunity to find unique items for their home and garden.
The Garden Room offers a variety of ideas, including brightly colored garden stakes, herb markers,
stunning totem poles, unique bird baths, sturdy planters and an assortment of vases and wall pockets.
The Cottage Room features work with sailboat, fish, bird and reptile themes; lamps, plates,
bowls, serving dishes, vases, pitchers, mirrors and wall tiles are among the selections.
The studio is open for visitors to watch creativity in progress and to interact with the artists
personally. This is a unique opportunity to watch clay transformed from a cold, gray block
to a beautiful work of functional art!
