( Studio | The Artists | The Process )
Heather Lane is a working artist's studio. We love to have customers visit our studio, where
they can enjoy seeing the process in action, interact with us while we work, and see finished work in our
colorful showrooms.
Each piece is hand formed from raw clay. A variety of methods are used for the shaping
process: throwing at the potter’s wheel, using our slab roller and extruder, or forming pieces by
hand. As the pieces dry, the work is carefully monitored and additional finishing touches
are added to give the work a unique Heather Lane look.
After each piece is dried, it is stored until the hand painting process begins. Usually
several painters are busily working on different shapes, using a variety of designs, completing each
one-of-a-kind piece.
After a piece is painted, it is fired. Each day of the week one or more of our 3 kilns are
firing at temperatures hovering around 1900°F. When the first firing has completed, each
piece is inspected to determine if there are any visible flaws that would affect the quality of the
product. Once it has passed inspection, it is glazed and then fired again.
Sometimes a visitor is able to make choices “hot out of the oven,” straight from the kiln before it is
even priced. Throughout the process, each piece is handled and inspected by a number of
artists to maintain the highest level of quality.
